Q& A sessions with Co-President of Chopard, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele

How did you get started in watches? Was it an interest that was ‘naturally transferred’ from your father?
KFS: I started working in our family company in my “mid-twenties” (1980). In fact after my regular schooling I followed an apprenticeship in jewelry making first and my passion for watch making developed only during the last 15 year or so.

Tell us what made you set up the LUC Collection, what inspired you to come up with this idea?
KFS: The development of the LUC Collection is the direct result of my passion for watch making. I was convinced that Chopard needed to develop its own watch movements in order to increase our independence and to gain market share in the luxury men’s watch market.

What is your philosophy on limited editions; what is a Limited Edition?
KFS: A limited edition is a watch or jewelry design made in a pre-determined and limited quantity only and which is guaranteed not to be reproduced in the future. - In short, a potential collectors item. We issue limited editions only related to either true technical masterpieces (eg. Tourbillon, perpetual calendars) or to commemorative watches dedicated to the yearly Mille Miglia race for example. In the jewelry field we offer a lot of unique, one of a kind pieces.

You have the 'luxury' of being family-owned and doing what you feel is right for your company. Is it an advantage or a disadvantage?
KFS: There are definitely more advantages than disadvantages. One example: We are completely self financed and therefore independent. This is part of our philosophy and of course represents a limitation to fast growth. On the other side our risks are calculated and we have full control of our destiny.

Also tell us about your interest in Vintage cars?
KFS: My father and I collect classic and vintage cars since many years and enjoy driving them at events such as the famous Mille Miglia race in Italy. Our collection is not limited to one brand and includes cars from the 1930-es up to 1960-es, Bentley, Mercedes, Porsche etc.

What improvement would you like to see at Chopard as a company?
KFS: A company is a living “thing”, constantly changing and evolving. This being said, we seize every opportunity to make improvements, anywhere from our production process to our customer relation and of course our products.

What were your dreams for Chopard?
KFS: As a family our dream for Chopard is to remain a family held company, a leader in its field while making a useful social contribution.

It is evident in all your creations as well as the way business is conducted at Chopard that everything runs on passion. How do you keep everyone - right from the family members to your staff - so motivated?
KFS: Passion is indeed an important “ingredient” in our business. But it also takes a lot of know-how, craftsman ship and precision to design, develop and produce outstanding watches and jewelry pieces. The motivation at Chopard comes quite naturally and is somewhat contagious.

Please provide a short brief on Chopard – the first designs introduced under your guidance, the collections that followed, the opening of boutiques…
KFS: Please see our fact sheet. -
I would like to highlight one particular development under my guidance: In 1996, I proposed to go back to our roots and develop our own calibers (watch movements) again. So we started an additional company, the “Chopard Manufacture” in the Swiss jura mountains, in a village called Fleurier. In this manufacture, we conceived the first L.U.C (Louis Ulysse Chopard, Chopard’s founder) movement (L.U.C 1.96), self winding with a 22 carat gold micro rotor, twin barrels, 65 hours of power reserve, COSC and Geneva Seal certifications. Since then a whole range of LUC watches was developed including à LUC Tourbillon and a Perpetual calendar!

Who is the Chopard client? How would you describe him/her?
KFS: There is probably not one specific Chopard Client. In terms of watches and jewelry our collection is quite vast, we propose sport watches in stainless steel (e.g. Happy Sport, Mille Miglia), sophisticated mechanical time pieces such as L.U.C up to diamond studied jewelry watches. The same stands for the jewelry section.
Last but not least there is also a range of accessories from writing instruments to handbags. Therefore the customer profiles are diversified as well. However Chopard clients share a passion for excellent design, superior craftsmanship and lasting value.

Which are your strongest markets?
KFS: Greater Europe is number one, followed by the US, Asia, Middle-East and Australia.

Quality is something that is synonymous with luxury. Do you find it hard to keep up in the times we are in now? How important is quality in this day of use and throw or replenish?
KFS: I think a true luxury product should automatically be of excellent quality. It should be made to outlast other products both in design and craftsman ship . It certainly will be more expensive in the beginning but the owner will appreciate his purchase much longer.

What are your passions in life? Do you get time to indulge in these passions?
KFS: First of all my family, watchmaking, vintage and classic cars, wine and sports. Unfortunately there is never enough time for all of them

Please tell us a bit about your family. They are actively involved in the business; so please provide a brief on their areas of interest in the business.
KFS: My father is the Chairman of the Chopard Holding. Both my parents are still actively involved in the day to day business. My sister Caroline manages amongst other things development and design of our ladies products (watches and jewelry) she also oversees our retail operations and her big passion is the Chopard High Jewelry Collection. I take care of the men’s products, marketing, legal aspects of the company, finance etc.

You are known as a person who loves his family more than anything else. Do the business and family matters ever clash?
KFS: Running a family business is indeed not a simple matter but not so much different to a publicly traded company! We established rules and common values, which everyone respects and all important decisions are taken together. In fact a family company structure offers a number of advantages such as for example the possibility to follow long term strategies, to establish more personal relationships with staff members, customers and suppliers etc.

Are there any challenges you face or have faced of running a family business?
KFS: What are your impressions of Oman as a luxury market?
KFS: The last time I came to Oman was about 20 years ago, and I must say, what I see today is much different. The country has developed a lot, but has kept its unique traditional and welcoming character. As far as the opportunities for the luxury industry are concerned the local market has grown considerably over the last years. We are very proud to unveil our Chopard Corner here with the Khimji Ramdas family, with whom we are enjoying privileged relationships since over a decade.

About Frigidaire:

More than ninety years ago, Frigidaire began as a pioneer in the new era of electrical refrigeration. In 1918, General Motors purchased the refrigerator company that became known as Frigidaire. Through the decades, Frigidaire has been a leading appliance innovator, introducing features and styling that have shaped kitchens and laundry rooms around the world. As a result of Frigidaire’s advancements in refrigeration, the name Frigidaire became synonymous with refrigerators. Consumers began to refer to their refrigerators as “The Frigidaire” and many still call it by that name today.

While Frigidaire excelled early in refrigeration, the company quickly expanded its expertise to other cooling products, such as home food freezers and air conditioners. In 1929 Frigidaire introduced the first chest-type home food freezer. Families could then safely preserve a large quantity of meats, homegrown fruits and vegetables for future consumption. The freezer has had a significant impact on shopping habits and the retail environment. That same year, Frigidaire also introduced the first self-contained room air conditioner with all parts in one single unit. While this appliance was considered a luxury at the time, it too has become a necessity in 21st century homes.

In the decades that followed, Frigidaire focused on styling and added features that would make housewives’ lives easier and more enjoyable. In 1948 Frigidaire pioneered the first ever combination refrigerator/freezer with a completely separate freezer section, further increasing the amount of food that could be frozen and preserved for future use.

A new industry standard was also set in 1950 when Frigidaire manufactured the first 30-inch wide electric range. This size continues to be the standard in North American homes and has impacted the way that meals are prepared. By the mid-1950’s kitchen styling became the trend when Frigidaire offered the first color-matched appliances. A new home with matching pale yellow oven, cooktop, dishwasher and refrigerator was a dream- come- true for any couple.

Convenience was the idea behind two enhancements in the 60’s and 70’s. Enjoying a refreshing cold beverage became easier in 1965 when Frigidaire launched the first automatic ice maker which delivered cubes to the ice saver on the door. Then in 1974, ice, juice and water service through the door on a top mount refrigerator made it even simpler to enjoy your favorite beverage.

Apartment dwellers and those with small homes appreciated the 1970 Frigidaire unveiling of the first laundry center. This washer with top-mounted dryer was narrow enough to fit in a closet. Even now many consumers prefer the space-saving option that the laundry center provides. Health and well-being were the primary factors when Frigidaire introduced the industry’s first built-in ice and water refrigerator filtration system in 1996. The PureSource™ Ice and Water Filter in side-by-side refrigerators reduced lead, chlorine, particulates and cysts to make ice and water healthier and give it better taste, odor and clarity. The filter was easy to install and cost much less and was more convenient than bottled water.

From the first home chest freezer in 1929 to the first frost-free chest freezer in 2006, Frigidaire’s advancements in household appliances have had a significant impact on the lives of consumers worldwide.

Since 1918, families have made Frigidaire a trusted name in home appliances. The brand heritage is rich with quality products and lifestyle-improving innovations. Today, more than ever, Frigidaire provides the pioneering features of tomorrow with an emphasis on quality, trust and service.
